Virtual Signaling Has No Place in Belonging Conversations

Writer's picture: Dan BergerDan Berger

I was on a webinar last week titled The Biology of Belonging: Remembering Nature's Ways hosted by SCIENCE AND NONDUALITY. I knew it was gonna be new agey but when it started out with what sounded like a Native American chant, I had to refrain from my eyes rolling too hard.

And then I saw the kaffiyeh around the host's neck.

How can you talk about belonging when you adorn a symbol that outrightly alienates a group of people (e.g. most Jews), and, for many, is a symbol that celebrates terrorism?

I shared my discomfort with it on the chat and was told "everyone is welcome" by the organizer.

No, everyone is not welcome if the host's message is exclusion. I replied to their message and was promptly kicked out of the zoom.

So much for belonging.
