Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Rachel Wolfe, wrote an essay titled What Happens When a Whole Generation Never Grows Up? that tells the story of three millennials that have avoided adulthood.
Cody Harding, 38: “It feels like the instructions for how to live a good life don’t apply anymore. And nobody has updated them.”
Renata Leo, 31: “Redecorating [my room] would mean accepting that I’m not leaving." She is still sleeping in her childhood bedroom.
Semira Fuller, 39: “Everything feels like a struggle.” She also shared that motherhood is a “nonstarter” because “I’m still figuring myself out as a priority.”
While they may sound self-victimizing, they're actually in pain, and I empathize with them. They feel ignored and left behind. Their stories are emblematic of our country's belonging crisis. They're missing a sense of belonging in their lives.
There is a solution, however: Each of us needs to take matters into our own hands and embark on a path to find belonging. No one is going to do it for us.
