5 DC Startup Titans that Fly Under the Radar →
inthecapital:
These guys have done incredible things for the DC startup community but are not the kind to hog the spotlight. Like a good Milford man, they are neither seen nor heard. Yes, I had to throw in an ArrestedDevelopment reference.

How to respond to email intros
I really enjoy introducing people in my network to one another. This is especially rewarding for me because I love connecting people. In fact, creating meaningful connections is one of the driving principles behind my startup, Social Tables.
My intro emails usually look like this:
Foo, meet Bar. Bar, meet Foo.
Foo, Bar is blah blah blah. I know her through blah blah blah. She’s awesome.

My plans for 2012
New year, new resolutions. It’s time to get my commitments for the new year down on paper. Here we go.
Track everything. I just got a Fitbit so I can start logging my daily activity, exercise and sleep habits.
Track everything - business edition. Make more data-driven decisions at Social Tables: More spit tests, more pattern recognition, more laser focus.
Read one new book a month. On my...

Your Very Own Stuart Smalley Moment
This morning, as I was getting ready, I had an impromptu Stuart Smalley moment. I stared at myself in the mirror and said out loud: “Social Tables is doing awesome. Our roadmap is solid. And god damnit we will be successful.”
I’m not sure where this came from. I mean, things are going really well for us. Our team is formidable, our userbase is growing fast, our product is...

DC is awesome for startups. Here's proof.
So DC Week just wrapped up last friday (BYT’s photos here) and DC Entrepreneurship Week has arrived. I didn’t even get a chance to breathe!
Apart from being informative and fun-filled, these two weeks are illustrating why DC is [again] becoming a technology hub.
In his October 2011 essay, Paul Ghraham says tech hubs work because within them startups are seen as cool and chance...

Photos from Papua New Guinea →
I just returned from two weeks in Papua New Guinea. We spent time on the Sepik River, in Goroka, Madang, Mt. Hagen and Tari. It was as undeveloped and poor as the countries in sub-saharan Africa, where most people don’t have shoes and live off of about a dollar a day. There are no restaurants or bars and tourists must remain within the confines of their hotels at night. Despite the poverty,...

What can DC do to foster a startup culture?
I went to dinner with a prominent DC-area investor the other night and he asked those at the table this very question. After dinner, I emailed him my ideas:
Branding. Half of it is branding/perception so DC should be at the forefront of leveraging the latest technology to communicate with the world (and its potential residents/investors/etc). Mayor Bloomberg established the Chief Digital Officer...

The Agony of Seating Charts, in tweets
This is why I built my startup. socialtables:
We closely monitor tweets that contain the words “seating” and “wedding” to identify brides and grooms-to-be that will find Social Tables useful.
Here are a few recent ones that beautifully capture why we built our product.
And a few hours later…

So Your Startup's Got Some Interns?
Your startup is kicking ass, your name is getting out there, and you’ve gotten some interns for the summer. Now what?
